Alpacas are a fabulous breed of animal to own and enjoy. They are tremendous time wasters because you will find yourself leaning over the fence simply observing their antics and wondering where the day has gone. Originally from Peru and Chile there are two types of alpaca’s – Suri and Huacaya. The currently more popular Huacaya is characterised by a very full, fleecy coat whilst the Suri coat appears to be more like dreadlocks. The alpaca baby is known as a cria and is born after a gestation period of about 11 months. They are herd, flight animals and need to be with their own kind with some sort of shelter to avoid extreme weather and heat stress.
